These are some old-school snacks that all Koreans grow up eating and have nostalgic feelings about. But one of these is not like the others. Can you guess which one?
Okay, so I probably gave it away in the post title, but if you guessed the Kkokkal cones, you're right. And wanna know why? Cuz they're the only vegan ones of the lot! Seriously, I could go on and on about all my childhood favorite Korean snacks that are I no longer indulge in. Nongshim shrimp crackers (새우깡), onion ring snacks (양파링), choco pies, and pepero sticks were and still are some iconic ones that I honestly do miss. Sometimes I wish I could just be a kid again, munching away at a whole bag of Nongshim onion rings, carefully nibbling out gaps in the rings and then sticking them on my earlobes and pretending they are earrings. Don't try to tell me you didn't play with your food too!
Luckily, I don't have to give all my childhood snacks up because these don't contain any animal products. Sometimes I'm out and the only place to get food is a hole-in-the-wall convenience store, and if I'm super hungry, I will snack on a bag. Sure, it's not the healthiest thing to eat, but at least they're vegan.
In my opinion, there is only one way to eat these.... stick them on your fingers and eat one by one:

Rawr~~ claws comin' at you.

hahaha...totally forgot about how we used to eat these snacks! :)
Aww I remember eating those, too. I don't remember putting them on my earlobes, but I definitely stuck them on my fingers and pretended to have claws (which I promptly nibbled off). Haha.
Those corn chips are my favorite out of the whole lot, though!!! I am a corn addict. Drink some 옥수수차 with those on my finger tips & I'm happy.
@Tiffany hehe, i'd only do that with the onion rings... not the corn cones... not sure how that would work! :)
@Sidney i agree- they're addicting.... :P
These stir childhood memories for me too... Haven't had any of these in ages and am wondering now if the corn ones are the same ones that are sold in other Asian countries (since, never having been to Korea, I used to eat them in Thailand and Taiwan). Now I really want some! I'm going to have to explore various Asian stores in London to see if they sell these...
It's amazing that all around the world, kids eat those like witches' claws on their fingertips. Or maybe you picked that up during your time in the US, Mipa? I can't remember all the details, but I know you've lived in a few countries.
And, may I go off-topic for a second and say... Sidney? from the ultra-cute and interesting blog, who works at Starbucks? Hope I'm not freaking you out at all, but I read your blog regularly and haven't seen you here before. I just like reading expat blogs and pretending I'm one, LOL. Congratulations on your graduation. Are you vegan?
P.S. Mipa, thanks for confirming these are vegan and the onion rings are not. These were two of my favorite snax available in the Korean market here until I figured out that the onion rings aren't vegan. But the English-language labels on Korean products here are really brief and I just know they're not covering everything--especially for things like cookies--so I wondered about the claws... I mean, corn cones.
I LOVE KKOKKALCONE CORN SNACKS!!
:]
Interesting idea!
